Mandarine's: lopi love

September 08, 2014 in Knitting

As soon as my Lopi yarn arrived, I decided to cast on the sweater that I had in mind. Even though I do not like to have several projects on my needles, I wasn't patient enough to finish my Keynote cardigan before casting something new on. And for my defense, I do not have that much work left on the latter. I've finished the body, and I'm now picking up stiches to start ribbing. So I do not feel too ovewelmed with what I'm currently working on.

The Strokkur sweater is coming along nicely. I just adore the rustic feeling of the yarn, and I cannot help but picture myself hiking somewhere on an island, up in the North, the sweater on my shoulders. I'm very looking forward to seeing how the colorwork is going to look. I'm pretty much obssessed with Fair Isle since I made my very first swatch for the Sheltand Wool Week Knit Along ( that is started in less than a month!).

We decided to head back to the woods today with the aim to come back home with just a few mushrooms in our basket. We worked on the flat for the whole day yesterday, and didn't feel like having another intense work out.  But as I said before, once you're there, the mushrooming frenesy empowers you, and pushes you forward to find more than you can actually take. And that's what happened today; we came back with twice as many mushrooms as last time.

But it was so nice again, and now we have enough mushrooms to fill our winter larder, and share some with our family.

We didn't find that many chanterelles this year, but a lot of ginormous Slippery Jack & Xeroponus. And I was so happy to find a handful of Saffron Milk Cap. We actually call them "Whole Larder Love" mushrooms.

I hope hat you're having a wonderful beginning of Fall!

Mandarine's: Pumkin spice latte

Pumpkin Spice Latte

September 03, 2014 in Homesteading dreams, Home

Two years ago, I had shared on my previous blog a recipe of Pumkin Spice Latte. Since that time, I drink this delicious seasonal beverage from the very beginning of Fall, until the very end.
And I thought it could be a very good reminder to share how I enjoy it.

So you will need:

  • 1 cup of milk ( I love to use nut milk for this recipe, almond milk or hazelnut are perfect).
  • 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 or 2 shots of espresso
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of orange peel
  • Whipped cream

In a saucepan add the pumpkin with a bit of water. Cook until you obtain a thick puree. Then pour in the milk and bring to a boil. Add the cinnamon and the sugar. At the same time make coffee.

Put a tea filter over a mug, and pour in the milk. Then add the coffee and the vanilla extract. Cover with whipped cream and sprinkle with orange peel. And voilà!

Mandarine's: Lopi wool

Hello September!

I hope that you are doing well since last time and that you are embracing this new season.
Even though the Autumn has not officially started, I like to associate the 1st of September with the beginning of Fall. And I’ve been enjoying it so much!
Last weekend, I’ve been mushrooming for the first time in a very long time. And I came back home with a basket full of different mushrooms. Some of them have been eaten in soup, but the most part has been preserved for this winter.

Even though I'm not a college student anymore, I wanted to treat myself with some "back to school" supplies. And in my world, that means knitting stuff. I've been wanting this tote for such a long time. I often work in coffeeshops and so I thought that this little bag would be perfect to carry all of my projects around. I also ordered some icelandic yarn for a new sweater, and got some very good deals whislt browsing people stashes on Ravelry. SO there's even more yarn on its way!

Botanical pressed, antique pendant Heather

A tribute to Summer: Woodland pendants

I've been trying to think during the whole Summer what would be the best way to keep a trace of the beautiful flowers that bloom in the woods during that season. I'm still updating my botanical diary every month since I started it, but I think that I also wanted to create something a little bit more special, something that I could carry around with me all the time.

These little pendants have been in my mind for so many years, but I never figure out how I could make them. As soon as the heather started blooming, I knew that I had to start working on them. My favourite flower was not going to last for more than a few weeks, and then the winter will settle and no flower will be collected during that time.

So I've been enjoying many walks in the woods lately, searching for plants to press and mushrooms to gather if they were on my way. Many pages of old books are now filled with colorful flowers that are slowly drying, getting ready to find their last resting nest.

These little gems are my tribute to Summer, and you can find them in my shop!
